The internationally profiled baritone Johannes Held captivates audiences as both an opera and song recital artist with his firm, luminous voice and compelling expressive power. His versatile career combines traditional mastery with innovative projects that engage audiences and critics alike.

Johannes Held began his musical journey with the Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben, studied in Freiburg, and completed his training at the renowned Royal Danish Opera Academy in Copenhagen under Susanna Eken. After graduating, he joined the ensemble of the Oldenburg State Theatre and has since appeared as a sought-after soloist on international stages, including the Royal Danish Opera, the Danish National Opera Aarhus, the Wermland Opera in Sweden, the State Theatre Mainz, and the Teatro Comunale di Bolzano in Italy. His operatic repertoire includes roles such as Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), and Escamillo (Carmen), complemented by parts such as Dr. Falke and Sid.

As a song recitalist, Johannes Held has earned a highly regarded reputation. He has performed more than 250 recitals – ranging from Schubert and Wolf to Mahler – collaborating with pianists such as Doriana Tchakarova, Daniel Heide, Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula, Götz Payer, and Gábor Csalog. His concert appearances have taken him to venues and festivals including the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Oxford International Song Festival, the Merano Music Weeks, the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, the Lofoten Chamber Music Festival, the Festival Academy Budapest, kamara.hu Budapest, Liedstadt Hamburg, and the Liederhalle Stuttgart.

A particular focus of his work lies in unconventional formats. With “Winterreise staged,” he created a gripping, semi-theatrical interpretation of Schubert’s cycle that received international recognition, including a recording with Daniel Beskow (ARS Produktion, 2018). His innovative project “Herr Nuss” combines music, text, and performance in a novel way, opening new pathways into the world of song.

Since 2012, Johannes Held has been developing the Liedfestival Sindelfingen (formerly known as the art song festival DER ZWERG), which under his artistic direction has grown into a widely respected platform for song, emerging artists, and musical encounters.
